Singapore police statement: Zubeen Garg’s death was not a murder

Guwahati: The Singapore Police Force (SPF) on Thursday (December 18) clarified that the investigation into the death of Assam’s beloved cultural icon Zubeen Garg is still ongoing.

The clarification came after some media reports in India claimed that four people had been charged with murder in connection with the case.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam police on Friday (December 12) slapped the charge of murder against four of the seven accused in the unnatural death of Zubeen Garg.

Zubeen Garg died under mysterious circumstances in Singapore on September 19. He was in the country to attend the North East India Festival at the time of his death.

In a statement, the SPF said it is aware of online speculation about the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death. It also noted that media reports in India have mentioned that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in India has charged four people in the alleged murder of Zubeen Garg, The Straits Times reported .

However, the Singapore Police said that the case is still under investigation by the SPF, in line with the Singapore Coroners Act 2010. “Based on our investigations so far, the SPF does not suspect foul play in the death of Mr Garg,” the news paper quoted Singapore police as saying.

The SPF added that once police investigations are completed, the findings will be submitted to the State Coroner in Singapore. A coroner’s inquiry is scheduled to be held in January and February 2026.

The police explained that a coroner’s inquiry is a fact-finding process led by the coroner to determine the cause and circumstances of death. The findings of the inquiry will be made public after it is concluded.

Reiterating its position, the SPF said it is committed to carrying out a thorough and professional investigation into the case. It also appealed for patience and understanding from all parties involved.

“The SPF is committed to conducting a thorough and professional investigation into the case. We seek the patience and understanding of the parties involved. Meanwhile, we urge the public not to speculate and spread unverified information,” ST quoted Singapore police as saying.
