SIR drive intensifies in Uttarakhand; notices issued to 1.9 million voters.
Dehradun. The Election Department has intensified preparations for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in Uttarakhand. Under the SIR, objections regarding names, ages, and other details recorded in the draft electoral roll will now be resolved at the booth level itself. The Election Department has clarified that if a voter is dissatisfied with the decision of the Booth Level Officer (BLO), they may file an appeal.
While releasing the progress report on the SIR so far, Additional Chief Electoral Officer Dr. Vijay Jogdande stated that a large number of discrepancies regarding details have come to light during the electoral roll revision in the state. He mentioned that during the SIR process, inconsistencies were found in the names, ages, and other information of over 19 lakh voters. Notices are being issued to the concerned voters in all these cases.
According to the Election Department, the objective of the SIR is to make the electoral roll more accurate and error-free. Under this process, voters’ names, addresses, ages, and other essential details are being verified. Voters whose details show any discrepancies or deficiencies are being asked to provide necessary documents and clarifications.
Dr. Vijay Jogdande stated that voters receiving notices will be given an opportunity to clarify their status. Voters can present their documents before the concerned booth-level officer. Following verification, a preliminary decision will be taken at the BLO level, and the details of eligible voters will be rectified.
He added that if an individual is not satisfied with the BLO’s decision, the option to appeal remains available. In such cases, voters can lodge their objections or appeals with the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO), the District Election Officer (District Magistrate), or the office of the Chief Electoral Officer. The Election Department has established this system to ensure that no eligible voter’s name is adversely affected without due process. According to officials, special emphasis is being placed on maintaining transparency and fairness throughout the SIR (Special Intensive Revision) process. Officials at all levels have been instructed to listen carefully to voters’ objections and resolve them in accordance with the rules. Every voter will be given a full opportunity to present their case.
The Election Department has stepped up monitoring following the discovery of discrepancies in the voter list. Officials state that a large number of detail mismatches does not necessarily mean all the entries are incorrect. In many instances, there may be only minor differences regarding documents, name spellings, age, or other details, which will be rectified after verification.
The Election Department has appealed to voters to respond promptly upon receiving a notice and to provide the necessary documents. The department notes that completing the process on time will facilitate the finalization of the voter list and help avoid any inconvenience.
The role of Booth Level Officers (BLOs) is considered crucial in the SIR process. BLOs are directly contacting voters and verifying documents. The Election Department is continuously issuing guidelines to ensure the effective implementation of this process in both rural and urban areas.
The State Election Department maintains that the voter list forms the foundation of the democratic process; therefore, it is essential that it includes the names of genuine and eligible voters. Efforts are also being made to ensure that no eligible citizen is excluded from the list due to technical errors or a lack of information.
The Additional Chief Electoral Officer stated that the voter list prepared after the SIR process concludes will be more reliable and up-to-date. He appealed to all voters to cooperate in this process and to get any errors in their details rectified in a timely manner.
Currently, the SIR process is progressing rapidly in Uttarakhand. Following the issuance of notices to over 1.9 million voters, the process of hearings and grievance resolution at the booth level is set to begin. Subsequently, voters will also have the opportunity to present their case at a higher level through an appeals mechanism.
