Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike enters 19th day; says, “I will continue the struggle.”

New Delhi: Social activist and environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike at Jantar Mantar continues into its 19th day. Having fasted for an extended period, Wangchuk has made it clear that he will not back down on his demands. Despite appeals from opposition leaders, film personalities, the general public, and the courts to end the fast, he has decided to continue it. Wangchuk states that his condition is not yet critical enough to pose an immediate, severe threat to his life, and he remains capable of continuing the fast for several more days.
Sonam Wangchuk has long been leading a peaceful movement regarding his demands. His ongoing hunger strike at Jantar Mantar has become a topic of discussion across the country. The movement is garnering support from various social organizations, political leaders, and the general public. Meanwhile, some have urged him to end the fast out of concern for his health. However, Wangchuk has clarified that he will continue his struggle until concrete steps are taken regarding his demands.
Responding to concerns about his health, Wangchuk stated that he is under medical supervision and his condition is being constantly monitored. He acknowledged that fasting for a prolonged period is not easy, but emphasized that his objective is not personal gain; rather, he aims to draw attention to the issues for which he is campaigning.
He noted that while many have advised him to end the fast, he believes it is essential to see the movement through to its goal. Wangchuk added that he is proceeding with due regard for his physical capacity and health. He indicated that he is currently in a position to continue the fast and has made no decision to end it in the immediate future.
Political activity surrounding Sonam Wangchuk’s movement has also intensified. Several opposition leaders have voiced their support for him and urged the government to consider his demands. Some film personalities and social activists have also expressed concern regarding his health. Additionally, a section of the general public is voicing its support through social media and other platforms.
Meanwhile, the administration is also keeping a close watch on his condition. A team of health experts is monitoring his health, and doctors are keeping him under regular observation, considering the physical impact of a prolonged fast.
Sonam Wangchuk has long been active in addressing environmental, educational, and social issues in the country. He has consistently raised his voice regarding environmental and social matters, particularly those concerning the Himalayan regions. Public interest in his movement stems partly from his history of peacefully advocating for various causes of public interest.
Supporters continue to be present at the protest site; people are visiting to meet Wangchuk and express their solidarity with his campaign. At the same time, the administration has maintained security arrangements to prevent any untoward incidents.
Wangchuk maintains that his movement is proceeding in a non-violent and democratic manner. He has appealed to his supporters to maintain peace, asserting that dialogue and the democratic process should be the only avenues for raising demands.
This 19-day-long fast has once again brought social movements and issues of public interest into the national spotlight. All eyes are now on the future dialogue between the government and the protesters to see if a resolution to the issue can be reached.
For now, Sonam Wangchuk remains firm in his resolve and has made it clear that he will not end his fast anytime soon. He states that his struggle will continue until his demands are given serious consideration.
