Special Cell busts arms supply syndicate in Delhi-Punjab, two arrested
New Delhi (IANS). The Special Cell of Delhi Police on Tuesday busted a syndicate supplying illegal weapons to criminals and gangs in Delhi and Punjab. Along with this, the team has also arrested two people involved in this.
The accused have been identified as Shamsher Singh, 26, and Lovedeep Singh, 24, residents of Amritsar in Punjab. 12 semi-automatic pistols of 32 caliber have also been recovered from them.
Police had received specific information about smugglers planning to supply illegal weapons to criminals on July 20 between 9 pm and 10 pm near Delhi’s Majlis Park metro station. After this, taking immediate action, the Special Cell of Delhi Police laid a trap and succeeded in nabbing both the accused.
When the team searched the accused, seven 32 bore pistols were found in Shamsher’s bag, while five 32 bore pistols were found in Lovedeep’s bag. During interrogation, the accused revealed that they had to sell five pistols to criminals in Delhi, while seven pistols were to be given to members of the infamous Peja gang of Amritsar in Punjab.
Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) HGS Dhaliwal said the accused further disclosed that they had purchased the pistols from Burhanpur in Madhya Pradesh for Rs 30,000 each, which were to be sold to criminals for Rs 50,000.
Shamsher was arrested by the police in 2019 in a bike theft case and was lodged in Amritsar jail. In jail, he also befriended Tara Singh of Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, who was lodged in Amritsar Jail in an Arms Act case.
The Special CP said that in order to earn more money and meet his drug expenses, Shamsher lured a fellow drug addict, Lovedeep, from a nearby village. Both had planned to take a consignment of illegal arms from Burhanpur in Madhya Pradesh and sell them at high prices.
Both went to Burhanpur and bought weapons from Tara Singh. These weapons were to be delivered to gangsters and local criminals in Delhi and Punjab. The official said the accused have been arrested under the Arms Act. Further investigation is on to identify all the people in this network.
