Officials cited a government notification that spreading misinformation would be booked under sedition.
The notification issued by Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi said, “The government is making all efforts to restore peace and normalcy. Therefore, generating or spreading false information would be considered sedition.
The notification states that no person shall be immune from prosecution under the laws of the land, if he is found to be spreading false news, lies, rumors or any propaganda with malicious intent, as it may prejudge the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur. It may get worse.
In his notification, the Chief Secretary said: “Several persons holding responsible positions and having a large number of followers on social media were found to be directly involved in generating and/or sharing information with regard to the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur Are.”
“Many such reports have been found to be fake news, lies, rumors or misinformation. Creating and disseminating such false information likely to aggravate public opinion, incite violence and insurrection against the authority of the State with or without arms, leading to death in the State Yes, people can get hurt. There may be destruction and damage to bodies and properties.”
The notification said that it is hereby declared that no person found to be creating or spreading fake news, lies, rumors or misinformation shall be immune from prosecution under the laws of the land.
It added that the state government will not hesitate to take action as per law against those who are found creating or sharing or publishing any false information, which may lead to vitiation of the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur. .
The notification states that every person acting individually or on behalf of any group of persons located in or outside Manipur, on any social media platform or through any virtual, audio-visual or electronic medium or through any device shall verify any information before sharing or publishing it physically through the medium.
