The intensity of the earthquake was measured at 7.8 on the Richter scale, which is considered quite powerful. Its center was about 93 kilometers below the ground. Another shock was felt about two hours after the first earthquake. The intensity of this second earthquake was recorded at 6.4. Its center was at a depth of about 79 kilometers. Many weak buildings and structures were affected and cracks developed at some places due to two major aftershocks.

Relief teams are searching for people trapped under the debris and rescue operations have been intensified in the affected areas. Electricity and communication services have also been affected in many areas, causing some challenges in relief work. After the earthquake, people have been forced to spend the night in open fields and safe places.
