Study revealed that eating these substances instead of meat reduces the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

San Francisco: Replacing animal-based foods like red and processed meat with plant-based foods like nuts or legumes may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and overall mortality. May be found, a new study has found.
The study, published in the journal BMC Medicine, analyzed the results of 37 prior studies and its findings highlighted the potential health benefits of including more plant-based food in the diet.

The researchers conducted a systematic literature search on Medline, Embase, and Web of Science and included studies that used replacement analysis of animal-based foods with plant-based foods.

They found “medium certainty of evidence” that replacing one daily egg with nuts reduces heart disease mortality. Substituting olive oil for butter yielded similar results.

Replacing 50 grams of processed meat daily with 28 grams of nuts reduces the risk of coronary heart disease. On the other hand, studies have found that it is not a good idea to eat nuts or legumes in place of poultry or seafood.

There was little evidence that replacing red meat with nuts or legumes reduced the risk of coronary heart disease.

Researchers also discovered that using olive oil in place of butter, nuts in place of red meat, or nuts in place of one egg daily was inversely related to the frequency of type 2 diabetes.

In conclusion, the researchers found a moderate certainty of evidence supporting a reduced risk of all-cause mortality when substituting nuts or whole grains for red meat. This risk was also reduced by replacing processed meat with nuts or legumes, or unprocessed red meat with nuts, the study noted.

Using nuts or legumes in place of dairy or one egg per day, or butter in place of olive oil, was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality.

According to the researchers, their work is “the first systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize the associations between the replacement of animal-based with plant-based foods with a wide range of cardiometabolic outcomes, such as CVD mortality.” Is; incidence of CVD, CHD, and T2D; diabetes mortality, and all-cause mortality”.
