Study shows new immigrants are leaving Canada in large numbers

Toronto: A new study has revealed that more and more newcomers are leaving the country. While Canada plans to admit 500,000 new immigrants every year through 2025,

The joint study titled ‘The Leaky Bucket’ by the Institute for Canadian Citizenship (ICC) and the Conference Board of Canada says increasing numbers of immigrants are leaving Canada due to housing affordability, a poor job market and an overburdened healthcare system. ,

According to the report data, the trend of leaving Canada among newcomers suddenly increased in 2017 and 2019.

Most of them leave Canada after living between four and seven years in the country.

With about 1.3 per cent of new immigrants adding to Canada’s population each year, Daniel Bernhard, CEO of the Institute for Canadian Citizenship, which commissioned the study, said: “After giving Canada a try, increasing numbers of immigrants ‘no Saying ‘Thanks’, and moving on. This isn’t just a problem for immigrants. This is a problem for everyone.

ā€œAs Canada relies more and more on immigrants to fill critical shortages in key sectors such as housing and healthcare, our ability to retain them is becoming a matter of vital national interest.

ā€œSimply put, if Canada cannot help newcomers and help them become Canadians in their passports and in their hearts, we may soon be discussing our prosperity in the past tense.ā€

StĆ©phane Fournier, executive director of The Conference Board of Canada, which conducted the study, said: ā€œOur research in this area shows that immigration drives economic growth, improves worker-to-retiree ratios and reduces labor shortages. Which increases inflation. But as our research shows, attracting immigrants is only part of the equation, we also need to retain them once they come to Canada.

The study recommends that federal, provincial and local governments put in place programs that help new immigrants settle in Canada, invest in housing and health care and help employers recruit, hire and retain immigrant workers. Please help.
