In a historic ceremony associated with deep spiritual significance, Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji of Puthige Mutt unveiled his visionary plan to build the Sri Venkata Krishna Temple in Sydney, Australia. Bhoomi Puja, a sacred ground-breaking ceremony, marks the beginning of a massive project that promises to become one of the largest spiritual centers for Hindus living not only in Sydney but across Australia. “Spread over an impressive land of 4738 square metres, this temple is much more than just a place of worship. Swamiji sees it as a spiritual center that will spread the principles of Sanatana Dharma, providing insight into the sacred scriptures, the Vedas and the Sanskrit language. The temple’s mission extends to embracing various aspects of Hindu culture, including classical art, yoga, sattvic childcare and a vegetarian canteen, carefully planned to bring together the diverse Hindu communities in Sydney and the wider Australian context ” said Prasannacharya, a senior scholar and administrator of the Puthige Matha in Udupi. Bhoomi Puja was attended by enthusiastic Krishna devotees and marked the beginning of this transformational journey. Devotees turned out in large numbers to express their full support for this divine undertaking. Notably, the event witnessed the presence of local legislative members, council heads and representatives of various Hindu organisations, highlighting the community’s unity and commitment to the project. Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji, with a spiritual lineage dating back approximately 800 years, is recognized as a leading exponent of the Dvaita philosophy propounded by the 13th century sage, Madhvacharya. His tireless efforts have crossed geographical boundaries and spread the essence of Dvaita philosophy across continents including Europe, America and Australia. Beyond the borders, he engaged in intensive discussions with Middle Eastern rulers on various aspects of Sanatana Dharma, receiving praise for his intelligence and spiritual insight. Spiritual pioneer, Sugunendra Teertha Swamiji, is set to ascend the Sarvajna Peetham on January 18, 2024, and begin a two-year tenure as the administrator of the temple. This transfer of administrative responsibility, known as ‘Paryaya’ in Kannada, is a revered tradition among the eight Swamijis belonging to the Ashta Mathas of Udupi. The Sanyan cycle for 2024-2026 will begin with a grand ceremony which is expected to be attended by religious leaders, political figures, celebrities, writers, scholars and luminaries from diverse fields.
