Supreme Court seeks response from Bengal Governor on keeping the bill pending

Bengal: The West Bengal Assembly had passed eight major bills. But the Governor did not approve them. The Mamata government had filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court in this regard. The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice on this petition and sought a reply. A bench headed by Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud has sought a response from the Governor’s Secretariat and the Central Government (through the Ministry of Home Affairs) in the matter.

Advocate Aastha Sharma The petition was filed through advocate Aastha Sharma. The petition states that the governor’s conduct endangers the basic principles of the Constitution and democratic governance, as well as violates the rights of the people of the state to welfare measures to be implemented through bills. It further said, “Several important Bills are pending with the Governor of the State since 2022 (when Jagdeep Dhankhar took over as Governor) and the present Governor Dr CV Anand Bose has also not taken any steps to approve or reject these Bills.”
