Suspicious death of prisoner in Central Jail, panic in the department
Bilaspur. A prisoner died under suspicious circumstances in the Central Jail in Bilaspur. Four days ago the police had arrested him in a liquor case. The family says that before sending him to jail, the policemen had demanded money and beat him brutally. Alleging murder of the prisoner, he has demanded investigation and action against the culprits.
According to the information, Shravan Tambe (35), resident of village Mohra of Sipat area, Amritlal used to do farming. On January 17, the police arrested him with Mahua liquor. After which the police produced him in the court on January 19 and sent him to jail. Meanwhile he was in jail. When his family members came to meet him in jail, they were not allowed to meet him. It is being told that his health suddenly deteriorated in jail last Monday evening. According to the jail management, he started having difficulty in breathing, then he was immediately referred to the jail hospital and then to SIMS. He died late at night after reaching Sims. When the family was informed about this incident on Tuesday, they were shocked to hear the news of his death.
Shravan Tambe’s wife Lahara Bai alleges that when the police caught him with Mahua liquor, they demanded Rs 10,000 from him. When the family came to meet him at the police station, they asked him to bring the order from the court. Only after this he asked to allow us to meet. Lahrabai also alleges that money was first demanded from her. He did not have money to give to the police. On this the policemen asked him to arrange money. Meanwhile, he was kept in lockup for about 36 hours. Also he was beaten brutally. When he refused to pay the money, a case was registered against him and he was sent to jail.
The family members of the deceased prisoner allege that they were not allowed to meet them in the jail. The family members were visiting the jail for two days to know his condition. But, the jail management refused to allow the meeting. He also alleges that he was beaten and tortured in jail also. Family members told that when the post-mortem of Shravan Tambe’s body was done in Sims, blood had accumulated at many places including his head and mouth. It was clearly visible how brutally he had been beaten. However, after the death of the prisoner, an investigation is being conducted by a magistrate. In the presence of the magistrate, a team of doctors conducted the postmortem of the body. Further action will be taken after PM report and investigation. The inhumanity of the jail administration has also come to light in the case of the prisoner’s death. The jail guards admitted him to SIMS late in the evening, when he was not in a position to speak. Even after this his hands were handcuffed. He died during treatment, yet his body remained handcuffed.
