8-year-old son dies as Odisha man gives poison to two children before consuming himself

Bhubaneswar: In a tragic incident, an eight-year-old boy died reportedly after his father gave poison to him and his sister before consuming himself in Odisha’s Gajapati district today.

One Subhashis Panigrahi of Paralakhemundi reportedly consumed poison soon after giving to his eight-year-old son Bijayananda and 11-year-old daughter Priyadarshini due to some unknown reason.

All three of them were rescued by their relatives and admitted at Paralakhemundi Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, Bijayananda breathed his last at the District Headquarters Hospital, while his father Subhashis and Priyadarshini were shifted to the MKCH Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur as their condition deteriorated.

While the exact reason behind Subhashis taking the drastic step is yet to be ascertained, it is suspected that he was under severe mental pressure following the death of his wife Sweta on March 21, 2025.

Paralakhemundi Police has started an investigation into the matter. They have seized Bijayananda’s body for postmortem and are interrogating the relatives and neighbours of Subhashis to ascertain some lead in the case.
