Shubman Gill’s statement on not being selected for the T20 World Cup

Vadodara: India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill has finally opened up on his omission from the T20 World Cup, saying he respects the selectors’ decision and believes that ‘what is written in one’s destiny, no one can take it away.’
Gill, who was the vice-captain of the T20I team since Gautam Gambhir became head coach, was dropped from India’s 15-member squad for the 20-over World Cup starting February 7, with Axar Patel named as Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy.
Speaking to the media at the pre-match press conference ahead of the first ODI against New Zealand at the BCA (Kotambi) Stadium here, Gill said, “I believe I am where I should be in life. No one can take away what is written in my destiny. As a player, I want to play in the World Cup and win matches for my team. But despite that, I respect the selectors’ decision. I wish the T20 team all the best. I hope they win the World Cup.”
Gill was included in the T20I lineup just before the Asia Cup last year, as the Indian team was confident that the versatile anchor would perform well with an aggressive batting unit. Gill replaced Sanju Samson, who had scored three T20I centuries last year. He opened the innings with his Punjab teammate Abhishek Sharma.
However, the move didn’t yield the desired results, and India struggled to adapt to their traditional free-flowing batting style, a style that had become a hallmark of Gambhir’s coaching. Ultimately, the selectors decided to end the Gill experiment just before the T20 World Cup, insisting that Samson return to the opening position.
Gill will return to the team’s captaincy as India prepares to take on the Black Caps in three ODIs, starting Sunday. The two teams will then face each other in five T20Is, which will serve as a warm-up series ahead of the T20 World Cup.
