Railway ticket checking collected Rs 160 crore in fines: Southern Railway official

Tamil Nadu: Officials reported an increase in train passenger traffic in the Southern Railway Zone, with ticket inspection fine collections reaching ₹160.75 crore.
Train passenger traffic in the Southern Railway Zone, headquartered in Chennai, is projected to increase to 767.6 million in 2025-2026. Significantly, this number of passengers exceeds the Railway Board’s target of 766.2 million.
It has also been revealed that ticket inspection collections, which involve imposing fines on those traveling without tickets, have increased in 2025-2026.
The Southern Railway Zone collected ₹129.82 crore in ticket inspection fines in 2024-2025. Southern Railway officials stated that this amount will increase to ₹1607.5 crore in 2025-2026.
Officials said that the Railway Board had set a target of only Rs 142.81 crore every year for ticket inspection, but the collection has exceeded the target.
