Mayurbhanj innovator launches initiative to save forests with AI

Bhubaneswar/Baripada: A new forest conservation innovation has emerged from Odisha. Deb Prasanna Mohanty of Mayurbhanj has created an advanced sound-based artificial intelligence (AI) system called “Deep Ear,” designed to protect forests and prevent poaching.

Described as a highly effective “digital ear,” the device uses acoustic intelligence to detect and analyze sounds in the forest environment. Mohanty has already applied for a patent for this invention, which he believes could make a significant difference in forest conservation efforts. Placed at specific locations within forests, “Deep Ear” acts as a vigilant guardian, detecting suspicious activity and immediately alerting forest officials. Its acoustic detection system can accurately identify sounds associated with illegal activities such as tree felling with chainsaws or axes, gunfire, mining operations, and unauthorized human or vehicle movement.

In addition to detecting threats, the device is also capable of identifying animal sounds, including tiger and elephant roars, and tracking their movement. The AI is trained to distinguish between harmful sounds and surrounding natural sounds such as rain, wind, and bird calls, minimizing false alarms.

A major technological advantage of “Deep Ear” is its reliance on LoRa (long-range) communication technology, allowing it to operate effectively in remote, forested areas without mobile network connectivity.

Another significant advantage of this innovation is its affordability. While similar technology from international companies like Rainforest Connection in the US costs around ₹1.5 lakh per unit, Mohanty has developed “Deep Ear” at an estimated cost of just ₹12,000, making it a practical solution for large-scale use by the Indian Forest Department.

The inspiration behind this innovation stems from Mohanty’s deep connection with nature. Born in Bhanjpur, Baripada, Mayurbhanj district, he remembers spending hours as a child watching the sunset over the blue hills of Similipal. “That view is not just a memory, but a responsibility,” Mohanty said. “At a time when technology is advancing rapidly but nature is diminishing, as a conscious citizen and nature lover, protecting forests has become my primary goal.”

In addition to being a skilled technologist, Mohanty is also a renowned researcher and author on the traditional Chhau dance of Mayurbhanj, reflecting his strong connection to the region’s cultural heritage. What began as a private initiative in Bhanjpur has now become a source of pride for the entire Mayurbhanj district and Odisha.

With its potential to transform forest monitoring and conservation, “Deep Ear” is poised to become a significant milestone in protecting the state’s rich natural resources in the years to come.
