Tamil Nadu: Heavy rain warning for delta and southern districts today

Tamil Nadu: The Chennai Meteorological Department has stated that Cyclone Senya is likely to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal on Wednesday (November 26). Due to an atmospheric depression in the southeast Arabian Sea, a ‘yellow’ warning for heavy rainfall has been issued for 10 districts, including Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, and Thanjavur, on Monday.

The Meteorological Department issued a press release on Sunday: The low-pressure area that formed over the Strait of Malacca and the adjoining South Andaman Sea on Saturday (November 22) intensified into a deep depression on Sunday (November 23) morning and remains over the same area. It is likely to move west-northwestward and strengthen into a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining South Andaman Sea on Monday (November 24). It is likely to continue in this direction and intensify into a cyclonic storm ‘Senya’ over the southeast Bay of Bengal on Wednesday (November 26) within the next 48 hours.

Another Cyclone Symbol: Meanwhile, a low-pressure area (cyclonic circulation) formed over the Kumari Sagar and surrounding areas on Sunday (November 23). Consequently, a low-pressure area (cyclonic circulation) is expected to form over the Kumari Sagar and surrounding areas of the Sri Lanka-Southwest Bay of Bengal on Tuesday (November 25).

Yellow alert for 10 districts: Due to the atmospheric circulation over the Southeast Arabian Sea, isolated light rain is likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from Monday (November 24) to November 29.

In particular, heavy rain is likely at one or two places in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai districts on Monday (November 24). Due to this, a ‘yellow’ warning has been issued for these districts.

On Monday (November 24), Chennai’s suburbs will experience partly cloudy skies. Light rain is expected in some parts of the city.

Rainfall: In Tamil Nadu, the Nallumukku area in Tirunelveli district recorded the highest rainfall of 260 mm in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Sunday. Ootu recorded 250 mm, Kakkachi 230 mm, Manjolai (Tirunelveli) 210 mm, Tiruchendur, Kulasekaranpattinam 130 mm, Gayatharu 110 mm, and Kayalpattinam (Thoothukudi) 100 mm.

Fishermen’s Warning: Cyclonic winds with speeds of up to 55 km/h are expected along the Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar, and Kumari Sagar. It is reported that these winds may reach speeds of up to 55 km/h.
