Tamil Nadu: Minister inaugurates multi-skill park for differently-abled students

Tamil Nadu: School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh inaugurated a multi-skill park for students with disabilities at the Popili Raja Government Higher Secondary School in Puzhal, Chennai, on Tuesday.

During the School Education Department Grant Request (2024-2025), Minister Anbil Mahesh announced that a multi-skill park would be built to stimulate multiple senses for children with disabilities and provide a learning experience through play to improve their sensory, cognitive, gross motor, and fine motor skills.

Based on this, a total of 20 multi-talent parks were planned to be built for children in need of special attention under Integrated School Education in 20 districts of Tamil Nadu. A total of ₹2.6 crore (₹1.3 million) has been allocated for each park. As the first phase of this project, the Multi-Talented Park is now fully constructed at the Popili Raja Government Higher Secondary School in Puzhal Union, Chennai district. It was inaugurated on Tuesday by School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh.

This park is not just a typical playground, but a specially designed park that enhances various skills, such as vision, hearing, touch, and balance, for children with special needs. It is a wonderful place for all children to play together and learn through play. This will benefit the 410 students with special needs studying in Puzhal Union from the first to the second standard.

The park is equipped with sports and fitness equipment, such as slides, eco-platforms (merry-go-rounds), swings, seesaws, ball pits, air hockey, basketball systems, volleyballs, and more. This will improve children’s balance, body control, and spatial awareness. School education officials said that 10,482 students from Class 1 to Plus 2 across Tamil Nadu who require special attention will benefit from this project.

Integrated School Education State Project Director Ma. Aarthi, Madhavaram MLA Sudarshanam, School Education Director S. Kannappan, Integrated School Education Additional State Project Director S. Uma, Chennai District Principal Education Officer Kabir, and others participated in the event.
