Tamil Nadu: Over 1.52 lakh students admitted in government schools

Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Rajmohan has announced that 152,625 students have been admitted to government schools in the state so far. He provided this information during an event in Chennai to launch the student enrollment drive for the new academic year, 2026-2027.
On Friday, Minister Rajmohan visited a government-aided middle school in Chinthadirpet, Chennai, where he formally inaugurated the student recruitment drive for the new academic year. He also distributed educational materials such as textbooks, notebooks, school bags, uniforms, and colored pencils to the newly enrolled students. A large number of students and teachers attended the event.
Speaking to the media after the event, Minister Rajmohan stated that the enrollment process for government schools for the 2026-2027 academic year is progressing rapidly. He stated that 152,625 students have been admitted so far, and the government aims to enroll a total of 400,000 students in government schools this academic year.
He stated that the government’s efforts are to ensure that more students join the government education system and benefit from quality education. The Minister also stated that continuous steps are being taken to improve facilities in government schools.
Meanwhile, Minister Rajmohan also commented on the performance of students in private and government schools. He stated that the number of students failing in private schools is equal to that of students failing in government schools, and that the perception that the level of education in government schools is poor is incorrect. He stated that the results of students in both types of schools are approximately the same.
The Minister also reiterated the government’s commitment to school facilities. He stated that he had signed the first petition regarding the lack of toilets, drinking water facilities, and classroom needs in schools. He stated that if any deficiencies or needs are identified in government-aided schools, they will be immediately rectified upon filing a petition.
The government maintains that continuous efforts are underway to strengthen the education system and provide a better environment for students. The Education Department is focused on improving infrastructure as well as increasing enrollment so that more children can join government schools and benefit from educational opportunities.
