Tamil Nadu reels under intense heat as 16 districts record temperatures above 100°F

Tamil Nadu: The impact of the intense heat wave continued to intensify in Tamil Nadu on Thursday (May 28), with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit recorded in 16 districts of the state. According to the Meteorological Department, the highest temperature recorded was 106.16 degrees Fahrenheit in the Meenambakkam area of Chennai, disrupting normal daytime life in the city.

Amidst the intense heat, the Chennai Meteorological Department has issued a fresh weather bulletin, stating that the weather in some parts of the state may change in the coming days. According to the department, a low pressure area persists over the southeast Arabian Sea and its surrounding areas, while another low pressure system is active over the east-central and southeast Bay of Bengal. Due to these weather conditions, light rain and thundershowers are expected at isolated places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal regions from May 29 to June 3.

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning specifically for Friday (May 29). According to the weather forecast, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds is likely at one or two locations in Theni, Dindigul, Nilgiris, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, and Ranipet districts. Caution has been advised in these areas due to sudden weather changes and strong winds.

According to the department, this weather change is occurring due to the influence of low-pressure systems, which are increasing humidity and creating cloud formation conditions. Consequently, some districts may experience sudden heavy rain and lightning.

The weather changes are likely to continue on Saturday (May 30). The Meteorological Department has stated that heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds may occur at one or two locations in the hilly areas of Coimbatore, Dindigul, Nilgiris, Theni, Madurai, and Virudhunagar districts. The impact of the rain may be particularly severe in the hilly areas.

Despite the possibility of rain, however, heatwaves continue to linger in many parts of the state. The steadily rising temperatures are making it difficult for people to venture outside during the day. Electricity demand has also increased, and water consumption is on the rise.

The Meteorological Department has advised people to protect themselves from the scorching sun and hot winds, and to stay in safe places in rain-prone areas, given the possibility of lightning strikes.

Overall, Tamil Nadu is currently facing the dual impact of intense heat and changing weather. While temperatures are reaching record levels, low-pressure systems are also bringing rain to some districts.
