Tamil Nadu: Yellow warning issued for 4 districts today

Tamil Nadu: The Meteorological Department in Tamil Nadu has issued a yellow alert for Saturday (May 16th) in four districts of the state: Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Theni, anticipating heavy rainfall. A press release issued by the Chennai Meteorological Department on Friday stated that conditions are gradually developing for the arrival of the southwest monsoon, and this impact could lead to changes in weather patterns in many areas. According to the department, the southwest monsoon is expected to reach parts of the south Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Saturday, potentially altering weather patterns across the region. Meanwhile, a deep depression formed in the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining central-west Bay of Bengal is expected to remain active in that region, leading to increased cloud activity and rainfall activity in the surrounding states.

The Meteorological Department also stated that this system is likely to cause light rain and thunderstorms in parts of South Tamil Nadu, coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on Saturday. Thunderstorms and lightning are also possible at many locations, prompting public caution. Weather conditions are expected to be particularly severe in Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Theni districts, where a yellow alert has been issued for heavy rainfall. The department indicated that these districts may experience heavy rains, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, disrupting normal life. The Meteorological Department has urged people to avoid unnecessary travel and stay in safe places during the inclement weather. Fishermen have also been advised not to venture into the sea as wind speeds and waves are expected to increase. Such weather activity is considered normal before the arrival of the monsoon, but the current pressure and high humidity may increase the intensity of the rainfall. The department is continuously monitoring the situation and may issue further alerts if necessary. Local administrations have also been instructed to remain vigilant and prepared for emergencies to minimize any inconvenience.
