TDP chief urges PM to declare Cyclone Michong a national disaster

Amaravati: Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister and TDP supremo Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday appealed to the Center to declare Cyclone Michong, which caused huge damage in the state, as a national disaster.

In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Naidu said the cyclone caused widespread devastation in the state, claiming six lives and disrupting the lives of several lakh people in at least 15 districts. Chandrababu mentioned in the letter that preliminary assessments indicated a huge loss of Rs 10,000 crore with crop loss in 22 lakh acres.

There has also been significant loss of cattle, livestock and trees, Chandrababu said, while the impact on infrastructure is worrying and about 770 kilometers of roads have been damaged. He said that vital facilities like drinking water, irrigation and electricity were heavily affected. Chandrababu said major sectors like agriculture and fishing have suffered huge losses and mentioned in the letter that four farmers have taken their lives due to crop loss. Fishing communities lost boats, nets and their means of livelihood.

Chandrababu Naidu said in the letter, “Considering these circumstances and recognizing that the impact of the cyclone is not limited to Andhra Pradesh only, but has also affected neighboring Tamil Nadu, I am pleased to declare the Michong cyclone as a national disaster. I request you earnestly.” To the Prime Minister. The TDP supremo also requested that the Indian government send a team to assess and assess the damage caused by the cyclone.

Naidu wrote that declaring a national disaster would provide the necessary impetus to both immediate relief efforts and the establishment of resilient long-term infrastructure. “Furthermore, such a declaration would instill confidence among the victims, indicating unity against the challenges posed by this disaster,” he said.
