Thane: Doctor loses over Rs 30 lakh in cryptocurrency fraud
Thane: A 42-year-old woman doctor in Thane district of Maharashtra was duped of over Rs 30 lakh by a caller who lured her into buying cryptocurrency, police said on Friday. An official of the Manpada police station in Kalyan division said the victim, a resident of Khoni in Dombivli, in her complaint said the incident took place between August 2 and 6.
According to the complaint, the doctor received a call claiming that a parcel sent by her to Thailand on July 24 contained suspicious items. The caller lied that the parcel contained three passports, three SIM cards and MD drugs, among other things. The victim was then lured into downloading a mobile application and was lured into buying cryptocurrency worth Rs 30,86,535. The victim transferred the amount to various bank accounts as instructed, he said. The official said the matter is under investigation.
