The Chakma Students’ Union has pressed for a high-level investigation into the monastery murder

Digboi: The All India Chakma Students’ Union (AICSU) has on Sunday issued a powerful condemnation following the brutal killing of Venerable P.S. Pangree, the highly respected head monk of the Inthem Buddhist Monastery under Pengaree Police Station in Assam’s Tinsukia district.

The tragic incident came to fore on Saturday evening, mysteriously with an axe lying close to the corpse of the religious leader.

The monk’s death—marked by violent and suspicious circumstances—has deeply shaken the Buddhist community and raised grave concerns over the security of religious institutions in the region.

According to AICSU, the killing is not merely a tragic loss of a spiritual leader but a direct assault on the sanctity and moral foundations embedded in Buddhist monastic life.

The organization described the incident as “barbaric,” asserting that such an attack violates the very principles of peace and harmony that the monastery has long embodied.

In its statement, AICSU emphasized that the region’s Buddhist institutions have historically served as pillars of non-violence and communal harmony. The killing of the head monk, therefore, represents a shocking deviation from these values and demands an immediate, uncompromising response from authorities.

AICSU’s Demands for Immediate Government Intervention

In light of the severity of the incident, AICSU has placed a comprehensive set of demands before the Government of Assam and relevant law enforcement bodies. The union insists that only decisive and transparent action can restore public confidence and ensure justice for the slain monk.

First, AICSU has called for the immediate identification and arrest of all individuals involved in the killing.

The union underscored that authorities must not allow the perpetrators to evade accountability under any circumstances.

Second, it has demanded a high-level, impartial, and time-bound investigation, supervised by senior police officials. AICSU stressed that only an independent and transparent probe can ensure the truth is unearthed and justice is served.

Third, the organization urged the formation of a special monitoring committee tasked with overseeing the investigation’s progress. This committee, AICSU said, must ensure accountability at every stage of the process.

Fourth, AICSU has pressed for a speedy trial in a designated fast-track court, ensuring that the case does not languish in procedural delays. The union called for the “strictest punishment” to be delivered to the perpetrators.

Finally, AICSU highlighted the urgent need to strengthen security protocols for Buddhist monasteries across the region and provide counselling and community support to monks and families affected by the tragedy.

While expressing profound grief, AICSU President Drishyamuni Chakma extended heartfelt condolences to the monks of Inthem Monastery and the broader Buddhist community. He appealed to the public to uphold peace and unity during this period of collective mourning.

Chakma noted that the killing has inflicted a deep emotional wound on the community but urged citizens to respond with solidarity rather than fear. “May the departed soul attain eternal peace,” the statement said. “This tragic moment must strengthen our collective commitment to compassion, harmony, and justice.”

As investigations continue, the incident has prompted widespread calls for enhanced protection of spiritual leaders and religious institutions across northeastern India.
