The craze for cricket has strengthened community ties in the villages of Sirsa and Fatehabad.

In India, cricket isn’t just a sport; it’s a passion that runs through the hearts of millions. In Sirsa and Fatehabad, this passion comes alive through village-level cricket tournaments, which are now transforming local grounds into bustling sports hubs. Every year, villages organize tournaments that attract not only local teams but also participants from neighboring states like Punjab, Rajasthan, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. These events aren’t just matches; they’re festivals of sports, community, and brotherhood.

What makes these tournaments special is the support they receive from the local community. Panchayats, businessmen, politicians, and social leaders help organize the events smoothly. Players are provided with food, accommodation, and practice facilities. Organizers also livestream matches on social media, allowing cricket fans far and wide to follow the action. This digital reach has transformed these local events into spectacles that attract large online audiences.

One of the most popular tournaments in the region is the Baropul Cricket Tournament in Fatehabad. Organized for nearly two decades, this event has now become a legacy, held annually at the Jagdish Keru Cricket Stadium. This year, Shah Satnam Cricket Academy from Sirsa won, taking home a prize money of ₹1.70 lakh. Gurdit Sports Club was the runner-up, taking home ₹1.21 lakh. Individual honors, including ₹21,000 for Man of the Series, as well as awards for Best Batsman and Best Bowler, recognized outstanding performances. The organizers emphasized that the tournament is not only about promoting cricket, but also about fostering unity and teamwork within the community. For 11 days, local youth volunteer to manage the event, welcoming visiting teams and guests. BJP leader and former MLA Dura Ram attended the prize distribution ceremony and emphasized the tournament’s importance for the region.

Another exciting five-day tournament recently concluded in Chakkan, Sirsa, featuring 52 teams from Haryana, Punjab, and Rajasthan. The final match between Chakkan and Pilibanga was a thrilling five-over contest. Pilibanga set a target of 54 runs, but Chakkan successfully achieved it and won by nine wickets. The winners received cash prizes.

Special awards were also given for Best Batsman, Best Bowler, and Best Series, inspiring the players to improve. Sarpanch Amar Singh Chhapola and other local leaders presided over the event, demonstrating the deep connection between cricket and community leadership. Other villages, such as Kusumbi, Bani, Panniwala Mota, Dhingtania, Nehrana, and Ratta Kheda, have also started cricket tournaments as a way to encourage youth to stay active and stay away from negative influences. Local people work together to ensure these events are successful, demonstrating a spirit of cooperation and brotherhood.

A key feature of these tournaments is the support of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), who maintain strong ties with their villages. Many NRIs contribute financially and help organize tournaments, giving local talent a chance to shine. For example, the Sidhu brothers from Australia sponsor the annual January tournament in their village of Jalalana in Sirsa. They generously reward top performers with gifts like tractors and bikes, adding excitement and prestige to the events.

Raj Kasaniya, a cricket enthusiast and tournament organizer from Nathusari Chopta village, said that in Sirsa and Fatehabad, cricket isn’t just a sport; it’s a celebration that brings the community together. These tournaments foster friendships, motivate young players, and create memories that last a lifetime.

Parveen Doodi, another cricket enthusiast, said that with local support, live social media coverage and contributions from the diaspora across the world, village cricket in these areas has become a model for promoting sports, teamwork and community spirit at the grassroots level.
