Tamil Nadu: School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh stated that new subjects will be introduced into the curriculum for classes 1 through 3 in the upcoming academic year (2026-2027). The curriculum will be changed gradually for classes 4 and 5, and then for subsequent classes.
The High-Level Expert Committee and the New Syllabus Design Committee to revise the state curriculum in Tamil Nadu met on Monday at the Anna Centenary Library under the chairmanship of Minister Anbil Mahesh. Scholars and professors from various fields participated in the committees and shared their views on the development of the new curriculum.
After the meeting, Minister Anbil Mahesh told reporters: “This meeting discussed in detail what we are going to teach in school education over the next ten years.”
The changes made to school education subjects in Tamil Nadu, including Tamil, English, and Math, and how they should be adapted to the changing environment were discussed.
Instead of rushing into this issue, the focus will be on strengthening the curriculum for basic classes first. There was considerable discussion about the changes in school education after the COVID-19 pandemic and how to address the learning gaps.
Curriculum Objective: The curriculum aims to make learning and teaching enjoyable. Children should understand and learn well. To achieve this, principles must be fully adhered to. It is important for students to learn a subject through practical means rather than simply memorizing it and submitting it for exams. Most experts emphasized this view.
Additionally, opinions were presented on how to implement the aspects included in the State Education Policy regarding curriculum reform.
Values, Life Skills, and Good Conduct: He suggested that in today’s environment, there should be a separate class to teach children values, life skills, and good conduct.
We have developed a roadmap for the next phases of the curriculum. As a first step, we aim to complete the draft curriculum by March. Following this, new subjects will be added to the curriculum for classes 1 to 3 in the upcoming academic year (2026-2027). After this, the curriculum will be gradually changed for classes 4 and 5, and then for subsequent classes.
The curriculum will incorporate modern technology and teaching methods. He said that discussions were also held on how teachers could be trained on the curriculum.
The meeting was attended by P. Chandramohan, Principal Secretary of the School Education Department, S. Kannappan, Director, and Narayanan, member of the Arts Project High-Level Committee and Chairman of ISRO.
