Tiruvallur: Flyover construction on Cooum river slows down, residents demand early completion

Tamil Nadu: Construction of a flyover over the Cooum River between Sattara and Kondancheri in the Kadambattur Panchayat Union of Tiruvallur district has been progressing at a slow pace for over 11 months. This has led to growing discontent among locals, who have demanded that the construction be expedited and put into use soon.

The bridge is considered a vital link in the region, connecting over 30 villages, including Kadambattur-Mapadu, Perambakkam, Perumputhur, and Sunguvarachatram. A large number of vehicles travel on this route daily, including school and college buses, private passenger buses, and factory transport vehicles. According to estimates, over 50,000 vehicles travel on this route daily.

According to locals, this route is like a lifeline for the region, as it connects rural areas to cities and industrial areas. However, the old structure built on the Cooum River is damaged by floods every year during heavy rains, causing complete traffic disruption.

During the rainy season, the river’s water level rises, causing bridges to be washed away, completely cutting off many villages. During this time, people are forced to take longer alternative routes, which increases both time and fuel consumption. While repairs are sometimes carried out temporarily, traffic is not permanently resolved.

For this reason, the administration initiated a plan to construct a flyover here to provide a permanent solution and alleviate the problems caused by annual floods. However, the slow pace of construction has caused resentment among local residents. They say that the delay on such a vital road is affecting both daily life and business.

Villagers and travelers have demanded that the flyover be completed expeditiously so that traffic is not disrupted in future floods. People say that a permanent and robust structure, rather than temporary repairs, is the right solution to this problem.

At present, the eyes of the people in the area are fixed on the administration and the construction agency, and everyone is hoping that this flyover will be completed soon and opened to the public, which will provide relief to thousands of people.
