Chennai, June 9:
Minister of State for Minority Welfare A.M. Shahjahan on Monday stated that Tamil Nadu will not implement the new Waqf Act, and that the rules allowing the inclusion of non-Muslims in the Waqf Board will not be applicable in the state.
Speaking to reporters, the minister said that the amended law has not yet been implemented in any state and reiterated that Tamil Nadu will continue with the existing framework governing Waqf administration.
He further stated that the rules regarding the appointment of non-Muslims to the Waqf Board have neither been implemented in the past nor will be implemented in Tamil Nadu in the future.
The minister also pointed out the difficulties in uploading Waqf property details to the UMEED portal, and said that the state will request the central government to extend the deadline due to the process.
He said this after meeting pilgrims returning from Haj in Chennai and said that more than 6,000 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu performed Haj this year.
