Towards a decline, many shops lie vacant in Ponda Market Complex
Ponda: The Ponda Market Complex, inaugurated in 2011 at a cost of nearly Rs 40 million, remains almost deserted even a year after its construction. The project, aimed at increasing the city’s income, has faced challenges as many of its stores are vacant.
In 2009, the space now occupied by the huge market complex building was the booming center of Ponda Market, and residents said it was too narrow. It includes small sheds, walkways and open areas filled with shoppers. Vendors had taken over the narrow roads, creating difficulties for buyers.
Construction of the new market complex began after a fire destroyed the original market, leading to the displacement of vendors. The market area has undergone a significant transformation in 2011 with the construction of a new market complex of four floors. However, despite huge investment, about 80 out of 130 shops in the complex are vacant, creating a desert-like atmosphere in the market. ,
The displaced traders were later housed in newly constructed premises, but currently only a few shops are functioning and many of them are unused.
Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) officials said they actively participate in the process of giving subsidy to vacant areas. While the main stores are still operational, efforts are being made to improve and facilitate the functioning of the remaining stores.
