Train services halted on Nilgiri Mountain Railway route due to rain, landslides

Coimbatore: Indian Railways on Wednesday suspended train services on the Nilgiri Mountain Rail Route (NMR) between Coonoor and Mettupalayam after heavy rains and landslides affected the age-old rail route. Railway South Salem division officials said due to inclement climate, a landslide occurred at Hilguro between Kallar and Runnymedu and debris blocked the track.

Since the Meteorological Department has announced that rain will continue in this situation, the mountain train service has been canceled as a precautionary measure.

Notably, many areas of Tamil Nadu state have been inundated after hours of heavy to moderate rainfall in the region. Due to heavy rain overnight, water entered houses and markets in low-lying residential areas of Erode district. Around fifty houses in Annai Satya Nagar area of Erode were water logged after moderate to heavy rains yesterday midnight.

IMD has predicted heavy rain in more than 10 districts of Tamil Nadu in the next two days. IMD said that due to weather change, there is a possibility of heavy rain from time to time in more than 10 districts of Tamil Nadu. “Orange alert for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal! Be prepared for heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.6 to 204.4 mm) on November 22 and 23,” the IMD said in a post on Twitter.
