Consumption of petrol and diesel increased, figures for the month of April

Raipur/Delhi. Consumption of petroleum products such as diesel, petrol and LPG in the country has seen an increase in April, which shows the increase in economic activity in the country. According to data compiled by the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC), India’s diesel consumption increased to 8.24 million tonnes in April, the second highest monthly consumption ever recorded. This is due to the increased demand for diesel from the agriculture and transport sectors during the month. Last month, April 2024 saw a 4 percent year-on-year growth on a high base.

Diesel consumption had increased by double digits in April last year due to election campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections. Diesel accounts for about 40 percent of total fuel sales, and the increase in its consumption reflects high economic activity in both the agricultural and logistics sectors of the economy. Petrol consumption in April rose 4.6 percent year-on-year to 3.44 million tonnes. Petrol consumption had increased by 19 percent due to the vigorous campaigning carried out by various political parties in the Lok Sabha elections in April last year. This growth has happened on a high base which shows the increasing sales of vehicles in the economy.

During the last month, LPG consumption also registered a growth of 6.7 percent and the demand increased to 2.62 million tonnes. The reason for the increase in LPG consumption is also the Ujjwala scheme of the Central Government, due to which poor families have also got access to LPG fuel. Apart from this, commercial consumption of fuel in hotels and restaurants has also increased. According to the data, the consumption of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) by commercial airlines in the month of April was recorded at 7,66,000 tonnes, which is 3.25 percent more than the same month last year.
