Vedaranyam: 6 kg gold smuggled from Sri Lanka seized, person arrested
Tamil Nadu: Police seized 6 kg of gold smuggled from Sri Lanka.
On Thursday, 6 kg of gold worth approximately ₹7 crore, smuggled by sea, was seized near Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district. Additionally, Q Division police are investigating the matter after arresting a man involved in the smuggling on a two-wheeler motorcycle.
The Internal Security Intelligence Unit police received intelligence that gold was being smuggled from Sri Lanka to the Vedaranyam coastal area by boat. Following this, troopers, led by Inspector Rajesh of the Q Division, conducted a thorough surveillance along the Vedaranyam coastal area on Thursday.
They pursued a suspect who left Arukkattuthurai on a two-wheeler motorcycle.
Police intercepted him near Vidahamavadi village on the Vedaranyam-Nagai main road. At that time, police seized the gold bars from him and handed them over to the Customs Superintendent’s office in Thopputhurai. Investigations there revealed that the smuggled gold weighed 6 kg. Its value is estimated at approximately ₹7 crore.
It was discovered that the person involved in the smuggling was Shivakumar (42), son of Kattan, who lives near the Nellokkadai Mariamman Temple in Nagapattinam. It was also discovered that he was involved in a 2017 gold smuggling case in Ramanathapuram.
A case was registered at the Customs Prevention Division office, and steps were taken to arrest Shivakumar and present him in court. The Special Branch police are continuing to investigate the case.
