Vehicle owners did not pay tax worth Rs 400 crore

Guwahati: Vehicle owners owe the state government around Rs 400 crore as vehicle tax. At the same time, the government is going to launch a massive statewide campaign against vehicle tax defaulters tomorrow.

According to official sources, the government had set November 15 as the deadline for tax defaulting vehicle owners to pay their outstanding taxes. Now the transport department will seize vehicles whose owners have not paid the tax within the stipulated time and also take action to auction the vehicles besides registering a case against tax-defaulter vehicle owners under the Motor Vehicles Tax Act, 1936. Will do.

Speaking to The Sentinel, Gautam Das, assistant commissioner of the transport department, said, “Vehicle owners owe the department around Rs 400 crore, which includes around Rs 150 crore in Guwahati alone. These outstanding taxes are mainly from commercial vehicles like trucks, buses, dumpers, tractors, mini city buses (magic), cabs, autorickshaws etc. We requested vehicle owners several times to pay the outstanding tax, but to no avail.

According to sources, many construction companies use dumpers but keep evading taxes. Many self-help groups have also purchased tractors. He has also increased vehicle taxes drastically.

In 2022, the state transport department took legal action against several manufacturing companies for vehicle tax evasion.
