Visakhapatnam police engaged in the investigation of the death of a pregnant woman
Visakhapatnam (IANS) | Visakhapatnam Police is probing the death of a pregnant woman. The woman’s semi-nude body was found on the YMCA beach under suspicious circumstances. The woman who left the house after an altercation with her in-laws is suspected to have committed suicide, but the circumstances in which the body was found raised suspicion on the cause of death.
The body of five-month pregnant Shweta (24) was found on the beach in the early hours of Wednesday.
She had left her house in Pedgantyada area on Tuesday evening after an altercation with her in-laws.
Her husband Manikant, who works as a software engineer in Hyderabad, told the police that they spoke on the phone around 6.15 pm. They tried to persuade her to return home by saying that small problems come in every family. He also advised her to think about the child. However, he disconnected the call and later switched off the phone.
The software engineer said that he had sent a message to him not to take any action in haste.
Manikant’s family has filed a missing report at Newport Police Station. He also left for Visakhapatnam from Hyderabad and on reaching the port city, he learned of Swetha’s body being found on the beach.
Police said that no injury marks were found on the body. The post-mortem report is expected to help the police ascertain the cause of death.
The police are also scanning the CCTV footage to ascertain whether the woman had gone to the beach alone or was accompanied by someone else. Investigators are also trying to ascertain how and when she reached the beach.
Since the beach is frequented by people till 11 pm, there is no possibility that no one saw the woman when she committed suicide. In addition, beach patrolling police, guard teams and beach guards also patrol the area.
The body was found at around 2 am in a semi-naked condition and partially buried in sand, which has raised many questions for the investigators.
Shweta’s mother Ramadevi has filed a police complaint, blaming her in-laws for her death. She alleged that they used to harass Shweta for dowry and her husband threatened her with divorce.
Police have registered a case against Shweta’s husband and in-laws under section 498A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Shweta, who is preparing for the civil services exam, married Manikant a year ago.
