Water level in Vaigai river rises due to heavy rain in Madurai
Madurai: The water level of Vaigai river has increased due to heavy rains in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday. The district administration said that as the northeast monsoon intensified in the state, the hilly areas including Varusanadu and Chathuragiri have been receiving adequate rainfall for the last few days.
The gates of the Vaigai Dam were opened on Friday, November 24, following heavy rains in the Vaigai catchment area, which left many areas in Madurai submerged.
Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Department, Chennai has issued a warning of light to moderate rain in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry today.
“As far as Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry are concerned, light to moderate rain is expected,” Chennai Regional Meteorological Department Director Balachandran said. On Friday, November 24, the Tamil Nadu Disaster Rescue Team rescued 10 people trapped due to a landslide in the Sengal Kombai tribal settlement located in an interior forest area, 20 km from Coonoor.
Heavy rains led to landslides and landslides at more than ten places on the Coonoor-Mettupalayam National Highway and Kothagiri-Mettupalayam Highway in the Nilgiris district on Thursday.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district received the season’s heaviest rainfall of 373 mm, while the Nilgiris recorded 369.9 mm of rainfall on Friday.
