With Made-in-India motherboards, Lenovo India to make strong bid for government desktop tenders
PUDUCHERRY: Personal computer (PC), laptop maker $1.9 billion revenue Lenovo India on Friday launched its desktops with locally sourced motherboards, which in turn will give it a stronger pitch in bidding for government supplies, a senior official said. Said.
Officials also said that demand for laptops in India has now stabilized after a surge during the Covid-19 period due to online classes conducted by schools and colleges.
Lenovo India manufactures desk tops, laptops in its 14 lakh unit plant here. According to Saurabh Aggarwal, Chief Operating Officer, producing the desktop with a made-in-India motherboard makes the machine compliant with the preferential market access (PMA) policy of the Government of India.
Lenovo India now qualifies for the Class 1 PMA bracket, in which more than 50 percent of components are met through local manufacturing for select products. This will give the company better value while bidding for government tenders for desktops.
The company said, with the recent announcement of approval of 27 firms under PLI 2.0 (Production Linked Incentive) for IT Hardware Scheme, Lenovo India has received additional incentive to increase PC production capacity and thereby promote Make in India. Will contribute to the initiative. Desktops account for about 40 per cent of the commercial segment, which is a huge number and rising laptop sales will not impact the desktop market much, a senior Lenovo executive said.
According to Agarwal, 70 per cent of the production at Lenovo India’s plant here is desktops and the remaining by laptops and others. The company’s Puducherry plant is operating at about 45 percent capacity, officials said.
Last year the plant produced about 7.4 lakh units and the production target for the current year is one million units. Every 24 seconds, a product – desktop or laptop – comes off the assembly line here. However, Agarwal declined to comment on the numbers.
