Women MPs Increased Dignity & Significance Of Parliament: PM Modi On Female Participation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, September 18, hailed the participation of women representatives in the country’s politics and spoke about their increasing number in recent times. He further stated that the presence of women representatives increased the “dignity and significance” of the Parliament.

During his opening speech in the Parliament, PM said, “As many as 600 women MPs brought changes in the country. They took important decisions from this Parliament. This House was also graced by the presence of a 25-year-old member as MP.”

“Bidding goodbye to this building is an emotional moment… Many bitter-sweet memories have been associated with it. We have all witnessed differences and disputes in the Parliament but at the same time, we have witnessed ‘Parivaar bhaav’,” he added.

It is important to note that PM Modi’s aknowlegdement regarding women participation in Parliament came amid the push of Opposition parties for the passage of Women’s Reservation Bill during the Special Session. “All Opposition parties have demanded passage of Women’s Reservation Bill in the Parliament’s Special Session,” Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said after an all-party meeting on Sunday.

The Nationalist Congress Party also proposed the passing of the landmark Women’s Reservation Bill at an all-party meeting held on the eve of the Special Session of Parliament, informed party leader Praful Patel.

PM Modi recalls his first tryst with Parliament
Recalling his first visit to Parliament as a Member of Parliament, PM Modi asserted that when he first entered the Lower House of Parliament in 2014, he bowed down his head before the Parliament building. He further expressed his gratitude to the House, saying that he never imagined that he would ever become the Prime Minister of the country.

“First time when I entered the Parliament as an MP, I bowed my head in front of the building. It was an emotional movement. I had never imagined a man who spent his life on the railway platform will become PM of the country, but this is the strength of the Indian democracy.”
