Zubeen Garg death case: Assam Police shares investigation details with Singapore

Guwahati: Reacting to the investigation into the death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday claimed that the state police conducted a better investigation than the Singapore police, and that is why those responsible for the death of Assam’s cultural icon were jailed.
Chief Minister Sarma said, “The Singapore police failed to find any foul play in Zubeen Garg’s death, while we filed murder charges against four people who created a controversy against our beloved singer. They have been jailed and are unable to get bail. This is a success for the Assam Police, and I must say that our investigation team conducted a better investigation than the Singapore police.”
He also said that people should thank the Assam government for conducting a thorough investigation into Garg’s untimely death.
Notably, the Singapore police recently told the court that Garg was heavily intoxicated on a yacht shortly before the incident in which he drowned.
According to witness statements, Garg was drinking alcohol while on the yacht. One witness said he drank several cups of alcohol, including gin and whiskey, and also took sips of Guinness stout.
The investigating officer told the court that Garg had previously gone for a swim, returned to the yacht, and was heard saying he was tired, before reentering the water a few minutes later.
The investigation also examined Garg’s medical history.
The court was told that he had a history of hypertension and epilepsy, and that his last seizure occurred in 2024.
Forensic tests revealed medication for both conditions in his blood.
However, investigators stated that it was impossible to determine with certainty whether Garg had taken epilepsy medication on the day of the incident, as eyewitness accounts were inconsistent.
A forensic pathologist testified that there were no physical indicators, such as a bitten tongue, that could indicate whether Garg had suffered a seizure before entering the water.
The yacht’s captain, named Crazy Monkey, also testified before the court.
He stated that two friends physically supported Garg while boarding the vessel because he was unable to walk properly.
The captain further stated that some passengers had already started drinking before boarding and that he had conducted two safety briefings during the trip.
In his testimony, the captain stated that when he saw Garg enter the water for the second time without a life jacket, he warned one of the singer’s friends that Garg appeared intoxicated and should not enter the water without safety gear.
The captain also stated that he jumped into the water and swam toward Garg after seeing him floating facedown.
The police told the court that statements of witnesses showed that Garg had entered the water of his own free will and had no intention of committing suicide.
