2 people arrested on suspicion of being Pakistani spies
Lucknow: The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested two persons on suspicion of spying for Pakistani intelligence agency ISI and being involved in terror financing, according to an official statement issued on Sunday. The arrested persons have been identified as Amrit Gill, also known as Amrit Pal (25), a resident of Bathinda in Punjab, and Riazuddin (36), a resident of Faridnagar in Ghaziabad.
According to the ATS, Amrit Gill was arrested from Bathinda on November 23 and brought to Lucknow on transit remand, while Riyazuddin was called to the ATS headquarters for questioning and later arrested on Sunday. ATS had received information that some persons were receiving money from dubious sources, which was allegedly being used for terrorist activities and espionage. The investigation revealed that the two were sending “sensitive confidential information” to the ISI in exchange for monetary benefits.
An FIR has been registered under relevant sections against Riazuddin, Izharul Haq and others at the ATS police station. Haq, currently lodged in Bihar jail, will be brought to Lucknow for further questioning in connection with the case. During the evidence collection process, the ATS examined Riyazuddin’s bank accounts and detected transactions totaling Rs 70 lakh between March and April 2022, which were transferred to various accounts. The money was allegedly sent to auto driver Amrit Gill, who in turn provided information, including details about Indian Army tanks, to the ISI.
Riazuddin and Haq reportedly met while working on welding projects in Rajasthan and have since been working for the Pakistani intelligence agency while maintaining communication with each other. Preliminary evidence and inquiries suggest that Gill was in touch with Pakistani ISI agents, sharing sensitive and restricted information related to the Indian Army. In return for his activities, he reportedly received financial support from Riazuddin and Haq. Further investigation is underway.
