Dalits from Pakistan must be given houses.. Supreme Court order
The Supreme Court has ordered the government to provide houses to Hindu Dalits who migrated from Pakistan and remained here. It has issued orders to the Center to this effect. Dalit Hindus who migrated from Pakistan some time ago are living in temporary residences in various parts of Delhi.
They mostly live near the Signature Bridge, especially in the Majnu Ka Tila area. However, the authorities are trying to remove their homes. They are constantly living in fear as they are trying to remove them in the name of encroachment. In this context, petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court seeking an order to grant them citizenship and houses from the Indian government. The court, which heard the matter, recently gave key orders. A bench headed by Justice MM Sundaresh and Justice N Koteshwar Singh made these comments on Monday. It was said that it is not enough to just give Indian citizenship to Hindu Dalits who came from Pakistan, but also to provide houses so that they can live with dignity. The court also ordered other rehabilitation measures.
It directed that a reply be given within four weeks in this regard. Also, the court was of the opinion that if the houses are removed for the purpose of removing encroachments or for development works, the Dalits will be inconvenienced. It directed that the removal of their houses be stopped. Currently, 250 families from Pakistan are living in this area. It is estimated that there are about a thousand Dalits. They have been living here for several years and have not had proper security of life.
