India successfully test-fires ‘Agni-1’ short-range ballistic missile off Odisha coast

Balasore: The Ministry of Defence on Friday said that the short-range ballistic missile ‘Agni-1’ was successfully test-launched from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha.
The launch validated all operational and technical parameters. An official statement said that the test was conducted under the supervision of the Strategic Forces Command. On September 24, 2025, the Defence Research and Development Organisation, in collaboration with the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), successfully test-launched the intermediate-range Agni-Prime missile from a rail-based mobile launcher system, under a full operational scenario.
This next-generation missile is designed to cover a range of up to 2,000 km and has several advanced features.
The first-of-its-kind launch was conducted from a specially designed rail-based mobile launcher, which has the capability to move on the rail network without any pre-conditioning, an official statement said.
It offers cross-country mobility and the capability to launch in low visibility conditions with a short reaction time. It is self-sustained and has all the independent launch capability features, including state-of-the-art communication systems and protection mechanisms.
The missile trajectory was tracked from multiple ground stations, and it was a textbook launch that met all mission objectives. This successful launch will enable the induction of futuristic rail-based systems into service. The launch was witnessed by senior DRDO scientists and officers from the Strategic Forces Command.
The road-mobile Agni-P has already been inducted into service after several successful flight trials.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, SFC, and the Armed Forces on the successful test of the intermediate-range Agni-Prime missile and said that this flight test puts India among a select group of countries that have developed canisterized launch systems from rail networks.
