3 bison rescued from Tilari canal
Three bison fell into the main Tilari canal in Hali-Chandel. After struggling for about seven hours, forest department personnel and villagers helped in rescuing the animals safely on Saturday.
The height of the canal prevented trapped animals from climbing over the wall despite their best efforts. In an effort to facilitate the ascent of the bison, local people and forest department staff built a ladder-like structure.
A similar incident took place last week when a 4-year-old bison was rescued after it had fallen into the main canal in Hanakhane.
However, the arrival of bison and other animals into residential and agricultural areas has caused great concern among local farmers, who claim that these wild animals are ruining their crops.
“If we leave the fields at 5 pm, the bison come after 5 pm and leave, damaging the fields. We have written several letters to the concerned departments for action but the officials have failed to take action. The government should take responsibility and find a solution to this issue,” said a farmer. “We stay in a tent at night to guard our crops because if we don’t do that, the next day we will find that our crops have been damaged. Bison and other animals are damaging the crops, this is a big problem we have been facing for the last several years,” said another farmer.
