33 killed in rain-related incidents in Beijing

Beijing (IANS). At least 33 people died in rain-related incidents in the Chinese capital Beijing, officials said on Wednesday. Beijing’s deputy mayor Jia Linmao told a press conference that 18 others, including rescuers, were still missing. 33 people died mainly due to flood and collapse of houses.

From July 29 to August 2, Beijing was ravaged by torrential rains caused by the Doxuri typhoon.

It was the heaviest rainfall in Beijing since records began 140 years ago.

About 1.29 million people and about 15,000 hectares of crops have been affected by the floods caused by the rains.

According to Zia, the number is likely to rise as the assessment of property damage continues.

Torrential rains have caused significant damage to infrastructure in hilly areas, affecting water supply in 507 villages, power outages in 273 villages and 16 residential communities, and communications in 342 villages.

Transport came to a standstill in 256 villages.

With tireless efforts, power supply, drinking water, telecommunication services and transport have been successfully restored in most of the villages.

According to the deputy mayor, Beijing has also ensured that daily necessities, emergency supplies and medical treatment are available for the affected population, and has taken swift action to launch epidemic prevention work after the disaster.

The city has drawn up a reconstruction plan and its implementation will be expedited, Zia said.
