4 crore students across the country will talk about organ donation

New Delhi: More than four crore students in the country are being motivated to donate organs. These currently include only students of higher education i.e. colleges and universities. Students in the age group of 18 to 30 years have been included in this important campaign. Citing reports, experts say that the number of people donating organs is not even 10 percent of the patients. This simply means that more than 90 percent of patients in India die due to lack of organ transplants.

Experts believe that in such a situation, these students can remove the misconceptions regarding organ donation not only among themselves but also among their family members, relatives, friends and neighbors. UGC has written an official letter to all the universities across the country on this issue. A special campaign, ‘Online Organ Donation Pledge’ by Tissue Transplant Organization and UGC India will motivate all higher educational institutions in the country for organ donation. Giving information in this regard, UGC Chairman Professor M Jagadish Kumar said that in our country there is a huge shortage of organ donors and available organs as compared to the needy persons.

He said that organ donation is considered the biggest donation in our society. Despite this, many patients do not survive due to lack of organ donation. According to medical experts, there are many reports which suggest that every year two lakh patients require kidney transplant in India, but only 12,000 kidney donors come forward. Same is the situation in the field of liver transplant. Every year, around 50 thousand liver patients require liver transplant, whereas less than 4000 are available for liver transplant.

If we talk about heart patients, a large number of people in India require heart transplant. According to experts, out of more than 50 thousand heart patients, only 200-250 patients are known to have undergone heart transplant. In view of the huge shortage of organ donation, UGC has now decided to overcome the shortage of organ donation by spreading awareness through students in the age group of 18 to 30 in higher educational institutions across the country.

UGC Chairman says that students of all higher educational institutions, colleges, universities across the country are being appealed to spread awareness on this issue by taking the oath of organ donation. UGC believes that through their campaign, more than four crore students studying in higher educational institutions will become role models for this important organ donation campaign. The youth will help in connecting the common people with the pledge of organ donation and removing their misconceptions.

UGC has written a letter to all universities and higher educational institutions regarding the oath of organ donation. To spread the topic of organ donation to the youth and common people, the university has been asked to give information about the ethical medical and social dimensions of organ donation to the students through seminars and workshops.

According to senior surgeon Dr PN Sahay, a normal healthy person can save the lives of 8 people through organ donation after his death. According to Dr. Sahay, eight serious patients can get treatment and new life by donating a person’s kidney, liver, lungs, heart, pancreas and intestine after death. Dr Kanika Chaturvedi says that apart from these vital organs, tissues like cornea, skin, bone can also be donated, which can improve the lives of many serious patients.
