Dubai: The COP28 Presidency on Sunday formally unveiled its COP28 UAE Declaration on Climate, Relief, Recovery and Peace in support of global efforts to make fragile and conflict-affected countries and communities more resilient to climate impacts. Focuses on accelerating. Change.
The declaration, which has already been endorsed by 70 governments and 39 organizations, sets out a collective commitment to scale up investment and actions to build resilience in countries and communities affected by conflict, fragility or humanitarian crisis.
Commenting on the announcement, Ambassador Al Suwaidi, Director-General of COP28, said, “Climate change affects everyone, but we are not all being affected equally. In fragile and conflict-affected settings, extreme weather events affect three times more people annually than in other countries. Despite this, people living in highly fragile states receive a fraction of climate finance – up to 80 times less – than non-fragile states. The COP28 Presidency is committed to building action and consensus to change this.
The day also saw the launch of the ‘Moving Beyond Disasters’ Charter, which sets out principles for collaborative action to manage climate-related risks and protect vulnerable populations. Both the Declaration and the Charter are one of a series of initiatives being taken at the UN Climate Change Conference to accelerate global resilience efforts.
The COP28 Presidency The UAE, IGAD and the UN also hosted the Presidents of the countries of the Horn of Africa to present their regional climate protection strategy, and the COP28 Presidency met with the UN Secretary-General to mobilize new support for ‘Early Warning for All’ Partnered with. Initiative to cover 100 percent of the world with early warning systems by 2027.
With this in mind, 3 December was also dedicated to health, as part of the COP28 Presidency’s efforts to focus the global audience’s attention on protecting communities from the threats of climate change.
Thus, the day also marked the first climate and health ministerial meeting to be held at a COP, bringing together health ministers and senior health representatives from over 100 countries.
The Ministerial mobilized support for the COP28 Climate and Health Agenda and the ‘COP28 Declaration on Climate and Health’, which was unveiled at the World Climate Action Summit on 2 December.
It was supported by more than 120 countries and more than $1 billion of climate health financing was committed by partners.
Speaking on the day, Ambassador Al Suwaidi said, “As we build the energy systems of tomorrow, we cannot ignore the needs of today’s people. We must increasingly protect and promote their health and well-being while improving the climate-resilience of health care systems and reducing climate-health risks.
‘Protecting lives and livelihoods’ is one of the four central pillars in the Action Agenda of the COP28 Presidency focusing on people, nature, lives and livelihoods.
