72 out of 118 MLAs in Telangana face criminal charges, 59 from ruling BRS: Report
New Delhi: Of the 118 MLAs analyzed in Telangana, 72 have criminal cases against them, while 46 have serious criminal cases against them, a report revealed on Saturday. The report also said that out of 101 MLAs of the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi, 59 i.e. 58 percent are facing criminal cases. The report was published by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Telangana Election Watch which analyzed the criminal, financial and other background details of 118 of the 119 sitting MLAs. One constituency, Secunderabad Cantt, is vacant in the present assembly. The analysis is based on affidavits submitted by candidates ahead of the 2018 assembly elections and subsequent by-elections. The report said that out of the 118 sitting MLAs analysed, 72 (61 per cent) sitting MLAs have declared criminal cases against themselves, while 46 (39 per cent) sitting MLAs have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.
It also said that seven MLAs have declared cases related to attempt to murder under section 307 of the IPC and four MLAs have declared cases related to crimes against women. “One of the four sitting MLAs had declared a case related to rape under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code,” the report said. The report said that out of 101 MLAs of the ruling BRS, 59 (58 per cent) have criminal cases against them.
Whereas six out of seven (86 percent) of AIMIM, four out of six (67 percent) of Congress, two BJP MLAs and one out of two independent MLAs have given information in their affidavits about criminal cases registered against them. The report further said that out of 101 MLAs of the ruling BRS, 38 (38 per cent) have declared serious criminal cases against themselves. While two out of seven AIMIM MLAs (29 per cent), three out of six Congress MLAs (50 per cent), two BJP MLAs and one out of two independent MLAs have declared serious criminal cases registered against them. Voting for the Telangana Assembly elections is scheduled to take place on November 30. Counting of votes will take place on December 3. The BRS government led by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao is eyeing a third consecutive term in power, while the Congress is also campaigning aggressively to come to power in the state.
