Shabana’s suicide: Mother-in-law arrested from Kozhikode
Kozhikode: Police on Saturday registered the arrest of one more person in connection with the suicide of Kozhikode woman Shabna. Shabana’s mother-in-law Nabija has been arrested. She was crying after being arrested by the police in the case. The police detained Nabeeja at a hostel in Kozhikode and took her before the tribunal.
The investigation team had earlier arrested Nabeeza’s brother Haneefa, who has been accused of dowry harassment, physical aggression and abetment of suicide. Meanwhile, the trial of other accused like Cuñada and Shabana’s father-in-law is ongoing. The tribunal will accept his request for release on anticipatory bail. Hanifa’s plea for freedom under bail was also heard.
Habib’s wife Shabna, a native of Kunnumakkara, left this life due to marital problems. The couple had been married for a decade. Shabana’s parents force her to return to her home due to the difficulties she faces at her husband’s residence, yet she decides to stay with him.
However, considering it untenable to continue living there, Shabana opted to rent a place. To cover the expenses he requested the return of 120 sovereigns of gold contributed as part of the dowry. His request was rejected. On the day of her demise, her family members alleged that Shabana was physically assaulted by some members of her husband’s family. The family members of the deceased also published CCTV pictures of the attack on Hanifa. Shabana’s husband Habib is abroad.
