“West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) will execute the project of development of an electricity underground cable network in Siliguri. Therefore, private operators of cable television and those providing internet service through cable have been requested to work together so that their cables can also be pulled underground. “We have asked these service providers to register their names in the next two weeks so that we can know about the number of these providers and their areas,” Deb said after the meeting with representatives of service providers.
On 12 December, Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee laid the first foundation stone of the underground power cable project in a government act at the Kanchenjunga Stadium.
The estimated cost of this project, financed by the World Bank, is approximately Rs 550 million. About Rs 218 crore will be spent in the first phase.
About 32,000 electric poles and transformers will be removed. Initially work started in 17 out of 47 districts.
