Chennai: PG doctor found dead after long hours on duty
Chennai: After two deaths of doctors earlier this month, another medico death of a 26-year-old post graduate medical student has shocked the medical fraternity.
Medical student Dr Tamiz Azghan died due to myocardial infarction on Sunday morning.
It is reported that he was on duty for 48 hours continuously and while on duty on Saturday, he suffered severe headache. He was found dead in his room on Sunday. Dr Thamizh Azhagan is said to have died after suffering a massive myocardial infarction in the postgraduate duty room of the hospital. At 3 o’clock in the afternoon he had a headache so he went to rest. He was later found dead in his room.
The death of doctors due to excessive workload has been raised as a major concern by the medical fraternity.
Members of the Doctors Association for Social Equality have expressed shock over the increasing cases of deaths of doctors in the state. Earlier this month, Maruthu Pandian, a postgraduate medical student at Madras Medical College, died after 48 hours on duty.
He said, “The Tamil Nadu government should immediately ban long working hours. Only eight hours of work should be ensured for practicing doctors and postgraduates. Doctors, nurses and medical staff should be appointed according to the number of patients. should go.” Dr R Shanthi, member of Doctors Association for Social Equality.
The association has requested the state government to give compensation of Rs 50 lakh to the families of doctors who died while on duty.
The doctor fraternity has also requested the National Medical Commission to take steps to regularize working hours to prevent such incidents.
