Hyderabad: Doctors at Medicover Hospital performed complex surgery to remove pancreatic tumor of a woman

Hyderabad: Surgeons at Medicover Hospitals announced the successful treatment of a 45-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with a rare type of pancreatic tumour called Solid Pseudopapillary Epithelial Neoplasm (SPEN). Surgeons at the hospital said the tumour is common in women, with a ratio of 10 to 1 and occurs mainly in women aged 30 to 40.

The patient was admitted to the hospital with abdominal pain and tests revealed a growth in the pancreatic region. Led by senior surgical gastroenterologist, Dr Sriman Narayan Yerrapu, the surgical team performed the Whipple procedure, a surgery performed to treat tumours in the pancreas, small intestine and bile duct. During the surgery, a 10×6 cm tumour was found densely adhered to the pancreatic head and portal vein. Dr Sriman Narayan said a biopsy confirmed it was SPEN, which is usually less malignant.
