New inscription of Nizam period found in Siddipet

Hyderabad: Kotha Telangana researchers Charitra Brundam, Ahobilam Karunakara and Mohammed Nasiruddin have identified a new inscription from the Nizam period. Found near Mattadiposhammagudi in Gundareddypalle in Siddipet, this Telugu language inscription, written in a 19th-century script, offers a unique glimpse of the Telugu script and administrative practices of the time. Authored by Srimoju Haragopal, the 16-line inscription is notable for its inclusion of Persian words, reflecting the official language of the time. It highlights the focus of royal administrators on irrigation systems, indicating their attention and responsibility towards local infrastructure.
The inscription dates to 1760 Shalivahana Saka, corresponding to the first full moon of the Hevilambi year, which is a Thursday according to the Panchanga calendar. In particular, it mentions the revenue (ayalu) granted by government official Bahajoi Hakundeen Saheb Bahadur Jamaman Kondalarao for Gundareddipalle Cheruvu Mattadi from 1246 to 1250 Hijri. The text further references the allocation of revenue associated with the canal by ‘Sri Rama’, Mattadiwara Aya, and the dates corresponding to the Hijri calendar. This discovery underlines the historical significance of the Nizam era in Telangana, providing valuable information about the administrative and irrigation practices of the period.
